Freelance Artist Wins CDB Vybzing Animated Video Challenge

Ikem Smith, a 24-year-old freelance visual artist and graduate of the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, is the winner of the Caribbean Development Bank’s (CDB) 2016 VYBZING Jamaica Animated Music Video Challenge.

Ikem won the top prize of US$2,000 for his entry entitled: ‘Funky Beam School Band’.

Parents Urged to Get Involved in Children’s Education

Eighteen wards of the State had an unforgettable experience today (May 20) when they met with Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness.

The youngsters are from eight facilities in Kingston, St. Andrew and St. Catherine, as well as foster care and family reintegration homes.

Doctor in the Making — Andre Christie’s Story of Triumph

Andre Christie will receive his associate of science degree from Bronx Community College next month, days after returning from South Africa, where he is currently doing health care fieldwork under the International Scholar Laureate Program. The day after commencement, he will fly down to Bethesda, Maryland, to participate in the National Institutes of Health Diabetic and Digestive and Kidney Diseases summer medical research programme. A month after that, he’ll transfer to New York University, the next step in his dream of becoming a doctor.

Godfrey Stewart Rewrites its History: A Story of Triumph and Transformation

If one is looking for a case study in the role of leadership in improving school performance, then Godfrey Stewart High School, formerly Savanna-la-Mar Comprehensive High School, is a classic example. Once plagued by low levels of academic performance coupled with negative behaviours, the school is gradually becoming Westmoreland’s centre for mathematics, which is no mean feat as, according to the school’s website, “incoming students are usually at the lower end of the academic continuum with only 18 – 25 per cent of them functionally literate”.
