Leaders from Tertiary Institutions to Upgrade Skills

Posted on 5/30/2016

Leaders from the island’s tertiary institutions now have an opportunity to upgrade their skills through the University and College Leadership Training Programme (UCLTP).

The programme, designed by the National College for Educational Leadership (NCEL), in collaboration with the Jamaica Tertiary Education Commission (J-TEC), seeks to equip participants with the requisite leadership and managerial competencies for effective leadership of contemporary colleges and universities.

Addressing the launch of the UCLTP on May 26 at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge at the University of the West Indies (UWI),  Mona Campus,  Youth and Information Minister, Senator the Hon. Ruel Reid, praised the NCEL and J-TEC for the initiative and encouraged them  to continue developing solutions that will revolutionize the education sector and encourage more persons to pursue tertiary education, training and certification.

He also challenged education leaders to do their part to  improve the sector. “You are all competing to get students enrolled. Quality assurance is very important, that is why we have NCEL and     J-TEC to make sure that as you compete, quality is not compromised,” the Minister said.

“We are on a trajectory to significantly improve the amount of people who have access to quality education,” he added.

The programme targets senior level administrators in local universities and colleges as well as high performing employees in these institutions.

It is anticipated that at the end of the programme, participants will be equipped to transform their respective learning institutions into high performing entities.

The programme consists of four core modules – Culture and Governance; Empowering Leadership; Student Development and Support; and Research in Institution.

The participants have the option of choosing one from five electives: Teaching and Learning; Financing Tertiary Education; The Digital Academy; Legal Issues; and Institutional Operations.

Successful candidates will be awarded the Certificate in Tertiary Educational Leadership certificate (CTEL).

The first cohort is to commence in September 2016, with the course lasting until  May 2017.

Application forms will be available as of June 26 on the NCEL website: www.ncel.gov.jm
