Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information, Dr. Maurice Smith, has hailed the country’s teachers, urging them to continue to inspire students to succeed.

He said that teachers have a responsibility to help all children realise their full potential regardless of their circumstance.

“The name teacher says that within you resides the ability to speak life, to empower, mentor and develop the individual. Teachers are people who believe in others and have an uncanny ability to spot the potential in somebody,” he said.

Dr. Smith was addressing a function to honour three retired teachers of the Cascade Primary School held on May 19 at the Golf View Hotel in Mandeville.

He noted that many children come from difficult home and community environments, and the school is often the only place where they will hear positive messages.

“They might have reading, numeracy and other challenges but you have got to work with them and show them that they are worthy,” Dr. Smith said.

“It is never about us, it is always about the students,” he added.

Recounting his own experience, Dr. Smith said it was teachers, who inspired and motivated him, and helped him with bus fare to and from school.

“It was my teacher, who made me know that I could become something in life. It was my teachers, who opened doors when every other door was shut. If you are going to take on the name of teacher, remember it is a position of service,” Dr. Smith said.

The three retirees honoured were: Jenora Brown, Herbert Campbell, and Lavern Henry. Dr. Smith commended them, noting that they have served the profession well.
