Education Ministry Partners with 4-H Clubs

Posted on 6/6/2016

The Ministry of Education, Youth and Information signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), on Thursday, June 2, with Jamaica 4-H to establish clubs in all public schools, from the primary to tertiary levels.

The MoU will strengthen the Ministry’s School Feeding Programme through which students are provided with nutritious meals and snacks to encourage regular attendance and boost learning capacity.

Speaking at the signing ceremony at the Ministry’s Heroes Circle offices, Minister of State, the Hon. Floyd Green, said the MoU will positively impact the school-feeding programme as well as the agricultural sector, and will cultivate an interest in agriculture and encourage entrepreneurship among young persons.

The School Feeding Programme will, under the agreement, utilise local produce from the school gardens.

Each club will be monitored by a teacher who will supervise the management of club activities.

“The Government understands that if we are going to move the country forward in terms of economic growth, agriculture has to be seen as one of the main sectors that will drive this growth. We have to produce a larger entrepreneurial class using agriculture as the base,” the Minister said.

The MoU will last for three years.
