Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen, is urging the leadership of the Jamaica Institute of Management (JIM) (2009) to continue developing creative academic programmes that will enable the island’s leaders to better manage their respective organisations.
“The Jamaica Institute of Management (JIM) is making leaders of individuals and I therefore urge you to continue the education needed to raise the standard of management in both the public and the private sectors in Jamaica,” he said.
The Governor-General was speaking at the Jamaica Institute of Management (2009) 2015 Manager of the Year Awards Ceremony, held at King’s House June 2.
He said despite the challenges that JIM has experienced over the years, it continues to provide management training to leaders across the island.
“Here in Jamaica, there are certain institutions that have been vanguards in the development of our country and the Jamaica Institute of Management is one such institution. Despite several obstacles, JIM continues to soar and to punch above its weight,” he said.
He praised the Chairpersons of JIM over the years, particularly those who have been responsible for creating the various academic programmes offered by the institution.
During the ceremony, Mr. Grantley Stephenson was named the recipient of the Jamaica Institute of Management (2009) 2015 Manager of the Year and Fellows Award, while Scarlette Gillings was awarded the Jamaica Institute of Management (2009) 2015 Entrepreneurship and Community Development Manager of the Year and Fellows Award.
Mr. Stephenson is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Kingston Wharves Limited and Mrs. Gillings is the former Managing Director of the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF).
The Governor-General lauded the recipients for their contribution to nation building over the years. “Each one is consistently proactive in his or her respective organisation and demonstrates prudent management, leadership skills in an ever changing financial and social environment,” he said.
In the meantime, Jamelia Jalaalwalikraam, final year student at the University of Technology (UTech), was announced winner of the George Phillip Memorial Scholarship.
JIM (2009) aims to be the preferred professional membership organisation for management leadership where Jamaica’s cadre of leaders and managers can network, electronically and face to face, to facilitate membership and to share successful and proven management practices for the benefit of building an effective cadre of managers in industry, government and commerce.
